The alternator: tips for detecting faults

The alternator converts the engine's mechanical energy into electrical energy. It is the source of electricity for your car. With it, you can roll the window up and down or listen to music in the car. The alternator also powers the headlights. It can also charge the battery while your car is running.

A car alternator uses magnets (rotor) and copper coils (stator). When the engine starts, the rotor spins inside the coil, driven by the belt.

    Knock sensor: definition and operation

Knocking is caused by uncontrolled combustion (auto-ignition) in the engine's combustion chamber. Therefore, this type of problem only exists in petrol engines operating under controlled ignition (spark plugs), whereas diesel engines rely on auto-ignition as part of their operating principle.

In its strategy to optimise the ignition angle, the engine control unit seeks the best angle to achieve the optimal combustion of the air/fuel mixture. However, depending on the engine's load/speed/temperature conditions, the mixture will ignite spontaneously, causing knocking. Consequently, the knock sensor will notify the computer to increase the ignition delay to eliminate knocking, which could damage the cylinder.

Faulty starter: symptoms to detect problems

The starter motor of a vehicle is a small motor connected to the flywheel to initiate the piston's initial compression. No more need for cranks or push-starts to get the car running! Simply turn the key or press the button connected to the battery to start your car.

Nowadays, all vehicles (internal combustion engines) have a starter motor, which is connected to the battery on one side and the flywheel on the other. Thanks to this, you can stop and restart your car effortlessly.
