The oil change indicator lights up on your Alfa Romeo? This warning indicates that a maintenance operation is required. If the oil change has not yet been performed, it is recommended to change the engine oil promptly, either by yourself if you are experienced or by consulting a professional.
To reset the Alfa Romeo oil change indicator, it is essential to know the vehicle's year and model, as the method may vary between a manual reset using the pedals or an electronic operation with a diagnostic tool (OBD scanner).

What does the oil change indicator look like on an Alfa Romeo?
The maintenance counter on Alfa Romeo vehicles serves as a reminder for maintenance deadlines, particularly the engine oil change. The frequency of this operation depends on the type of engine and oil used. It is generally set at 15,000, 20,000, or 30,000 kilometres, in line with the manufacturer's recommendations..
On Alfa Romeo models such as the Giulietta, Mito, 159, Giulia, or Stelvio, this maintenance reminder may appear in different ways on the dashboard:
- A spanner icon, symbolising mechanical maintenance.
- An oil can icon with a drop of oil, usually red.
- A text alert message on the central dashboard screen, if available.
- An audible signal at startup may also accompany the indicator and/or alert message.
It is important not to ignore these indications to maintain engine performance and ensure the longevity of your vehicle.
Resetting and service reset for Alfa Romeo
Resetting the oil change indicator electronically
On Alfa Romeo models, it is possible to reset the oil change indicator and maintenance interval using the klavkarr 210 and 310.
With the klavkarr 210 and 310 scanner, there's no need to visit the mechanic; reset the indicator yourself.
How to perform the service reset?
You can reset the oil change indicator and remove the service key using the EOBD Facile software included with the klavkarr 210 and 310. It's very simple; follow these steps:
- Switch on the ignition. For vehicles equipped with keyless start, press and hold the start button for approximately 10 seconds without pressing the brake pedal to avoid starting the engine.

- Connect to your klavkarr.
- Select the car brand "Alfa Romeo".
- Then choose your model: "Giulietta, Mito, 157, Giulia, etc...".
- In the selection window that appears, choose "ECU Maintenance Interval".
- Next, go to the "Maintenance/Oil Change" tab.
- Click the "Execute" button next to "Reset Maintenance Information" and confirm with OK.
- That's it, you have reset the oil change indicator and the service counter.
Since 2018, many Alfa Romeo models include a Security Gateway (SGW) system designed to secure the vehicle's electronic access.

Manually resetting the oil change indicator
On some Alfa Romeo models, the oil change indicator and maintenance counter can be reset manually without a diagnostic tool. The process is relatively simple and follows the manufacturer's recommendations. To know the exact procedure, it is advisable to consult the user manual for your vehicle.
Most often, you simply need to perform a procedure using the accelerator pedal to turn off the indicator. This procedure may vary depending on the model and year of your vehicle.
For vehicles manufactured before 2016:
- Close the doors.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Fully depress the accelerator pedal three times within 10 seconds.
- While holding the accelerator, press the brake pedal six times, then hold both pedals down for about 10 seconds.
- Turn off the ignition, release the pedals, and wait a few seconds.
- Start your vehicle.
- That's it, the oil change indicator is now off.
For vehicles manufactured after 2016:
- Close the doors.
- Turn the ignition to "On" by pressing the "Start" button without pressing the brake pedal to avoid starting the engine.
- Using the controls on the steering wheel, access the "Service" menu.
- Press and hold the "OK" button until the oil reset message appears.
- Confirm: select "Yes" or "OK".
- Turn off the ignition and wait a few seconds.
- Start your vehicle.
- That's it, the oil change indicator is now off.
Beware of the Security Gateway on some recent models
Since 2018, several Alfa Romeo models include an electronic protection system called Security Gateway (SGW). This system acts as a security barrier and limits access to sensitive vehicle functions via the OBD port. It specifically prevents changes to ECU parameters, such as resetting the oil change indicator after maintenance.
Thus, if your OBD diagnostic tool cannot access the maintenance ECUs or perform the indicator reset, this restriction is usually due to the presence of the SGW module, which blocks unauthorised operations.
Using an SGW bypass becomes essential. This is an adapter to connect between the scanner and the OBD port to restore access to maintenance functions.
