How to Reset the Oil Change Light on Fiat ?

Is the oil change warning light on in your Fiat 500, Tipo or Ducato? This warning means maintenance is required. If it hasn't been done yet, it's recommended to change the engine oil as soon as possible, either by yourself or by a certified mechanic.

To switch off the oil change warning, it's essential to know your vehicle's year of manufacture, as the reset method can vary between a manual reset using the dashboard controls, or an electronic reset with a Car Diagnostics Scanner (OBD tool).

What does the oil service warning light look like on a Fiat?

The maintenance counter in your Fiat is designed to remind you of essential service tasks, especially the engine oil change. The frequency depends on the engine type and the oil used – usually 15,000, 20,000 or 30,000 km based on the manufacturer's factory settings.

On Fiat models such as the 500, Tipo or Ducato, the reminder can appear on the dashboard in several forms:

    • A spanner icon indicating mechanical service is due.
    • A text alert message on the central display (if available).
    • An audible alert at startup may also accompany the light and/or message.

It's crucial to take these alerts seriously to ensure proper engine operation and extend your vehicle’s lifespan.

    Reset via electronic tools

On Fiat vehicles, you can reset the oil service light and maintenance interval using the klavkarr 210 or 310 Car Diagnostics Scanner.

With the klavkarr 210 or 310, there's no need to visit a garage – you can reset the light yourself.

How to perform a service reset?

You can reset the oil change warning light and remove the service key using the Klavkarr 210 or 310 Car Diagnostics Scanner. It’s very simple—just follow these steps:

    1. Connect to your Klavkarr device.
    2. Select the car make “Fiat.”
    3. Then choose your model: “500, Ducato, Panda, etc.”
    4. In the ECU selection window that appears, choose “Service Interval ECU.”
    5. Next, go to the “Diagnostics” tab, then “Maintenance/Oil Change.”
    6. Click on the “Run” button next to “Reset maintenance information” and confirm with OK.
    7. That’s it! The oil change warning light has been cleared, and the service interval has been reset.

If your vehicle is equipped with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), you will also need to carry out the following procedure:

    1. Go back to the previous menu
    2. Click on “Change ECU” and select “Engine ECU.”
    3. Go to the “Diagnostics” tab, then “Maintenance/Oil Change.”
    4. Click on “Run” next to “Oil change (Only for vehicles with DPF)” and confirm with OK.
    5. Done! The oil change counter has been successfully reset.

    Manual oil service light reset

On Fiat models, the oil service light reset can also be performed manually. The procedure is fairly simple – you can refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations via your owner’s manual.

Most of the time, a specific action using the accelerator pedal is enough to reset the light. The method may vary depending on the model and year of your vehicle.

    For vehicles manufactured before 2016:

    Fiat 500 pedals
    1. Close all doors.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Fully press the accelerator pedal three times within 10 seconds.
    4. Turn the ignition off and wait a few seconds.
    5. Start the engine.
    6. The oil service light should now be off.

    For vehicles manufactured after 2016:

    Fiat 500 menu button
    1. Close all doors.
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Using the menu button (or arrows on the steering wheel), navigate to: "Settings" > "Service" or "Maintenance" > "Reset Oil Change"
    4. If the option appears: confirm with OK.
    5. Confirm again: select “Yes” or “OK”.
    6. Turn the ignition off and wait a few seconds.
    7. Start the engine.
    8. The oil service light should now be off.

Some recent Fiat models do not display the reset option in the onboard computer. In this case, the only way to turn off the light is by using an OBD2 diagnostic tool.

Beware of the Security Gateway on recent Fiat models

Since 2018, certain Fiat models are equipped with a module called Security Gateway (SGW). This electronic device acts as a firewall, blocking access to active functions via the OBD port — in our case, it prevents resetting the oil service light.

If you're using a standard Car Diagnostics Scanner and it fails to access the maintenance ECUs, it’s likely because of this security system.

A SGW bypass is required. This is an adapter that connects between your scanner and the OBD port to restore access to maintenance features.
