Just like in a car, the engine oil light or maintenance light can also appear on a motorcycle. In most cases, it simply serves as a reminder that a service is due. If it remains displayed after the maintenance, a reset of the maintenance counter is often necessary.

All about the motorcycle oil change light
What does the oil light look like on a motorcycle?
On a motorcycle, as on a car, there are generally two types of alerts related to engine oil.
The first concerns the oil level
It is often indicated by an orange light in the shape of an oil can. This indicator may suggest that the oil level needs to be checked quickly and topped up if necessary, but it can also remind you that a service or oil change is required.
In the case of an oil change, the message "SERVICE" may also appear alongside the light.
The second concerns oil pressure
This alert is serious because the light is red. At startup, this light may come on for a few seconds and then turn off. However, if it stays on or lights up while you are riding, you should turn off the engine as soon as possible. Continuing to ride could severely damage the engine.
Why does the motorcycle oil change light stay on after the oil change?
The most common case is that the oil change has been done, but the maintenance counter has not been reset. Your motorcycle continues to display the light as if the service has not yet been performed.
On many motorcycles, especially newer ones, replacing the oil is not enough to automatically clear the alert. The maintenance schedule also needs to be reset. This operation can sometimes be done directly using the buttons on the dashboard, but in most cases, a diagnostic tool is required.
How to reset the motorcycle oil change light?
Resetting the oil change light on a BMW motorcycle
On many BMW motorcycles, the oil change light or the "SERVICE" message does not disappear automatically after the service. Even if the oil change has been completed, the motorcycle continues to display the alert until the maintenance schedule has been reset in the electronic system.
Depending on the model, a diagnostic tool, such as our klavkarr diagnostic tool, is often required to record the new service date or mileage. This is a fairly common feature on BMW motorcycles, especially newer ones.
